5 unexpected gadgets that are always good to have in your backpack

When planning a hike, mountain trip or camping weekend, it's easy to focus on the big things: tent, kitchen, clothes and food. But sometimes it's the small, unexpected items that make the biggest difference. Here we list five things you might not have thought of – but which can be invaluable once you're out in nature.

Silver tape or repair tape

A small piece of tape weighs practically nothing but can save the day. It can be used to mend a tear in your tent, tape a cracked water bottle together, patch a chafing wound, or reinforce a pair of hiking boots that are starting to give out. Wrap it around your water bottle or hiking pole a few times and you'll always have it handy.

Multi-strand cord or paracord

A thin but strong cord has almost unlimited uses. It can be used to stretch a tarp, hang wet clothes, mend your backpack, or tie something that's coming loose. Paracord is especially great because it can also be braided or split into strands.

Plastic bag or waterproof packing bag

A regular plastic bag or ziplock bag can serve as a rain cover for electronics, a collection bag for trash, a moisture barrier for dry socks, or a waterproof container for toilet paper. Small fabric drawstring bags also work great for organizing gear and keeping your backpack organized.

An extra headlamp or small flashlight

It's easy to think that you can get by with your mobile phone as a light source, but it's not to be trusted in the rain, cold or when the battery dies. An extra headlamp weighs little and allows you to cook, pitch a tent or go to the toilet in the dark - completely hands-free. Extra batteries are of course a plus.

A small seat pad

When you stop for lunch, coffee or a rest break, a small seat pad works wonders. It insulates against the cold ground, keeps you dry and makes the break much more pleasant. It can also be used as extra support in your backpack, as knee pads or as reinforcement in your sleeping bag.

It’s often the little details that make the biggest difference in nature. By thinking ahead and packing smarter, you can create security, comfort and flexibility on your trips. So next time you’re packing – don’t forget those unexpected items that will save the day.
